The Leeds Country Way Relay Race
What is it?
It’s a  Relay Race hosted by Kippax Harriers following the official old Leeds Country Way- an off road route circling the Leeds area of approximately 62 miles, split into six 10 mile sections.
When is it?
It’s an annual event taking place at the end of August/beginning of September.
Where does it start?
The race starts and finishes at Garforth Sports and Leisure Centre at 8am.
How can I be part of a team?
Dragons will form a team of 12 of its members split into 6 pairs. The pairs can be single gender or mixed, but because runners in a pair must finish their leg together, then it’s recommended to match pairs by ability.
Is it marshalled?
No. You are expected to be familiar with your section of the route or follow the route descriptions and map. There will be time keepers at baton checkpoints.
How is each section divided?
Route descriptions of each section are given to each team by the host club Kippax Harriers. This, together with route maps can be downloaded from their web site at http://www.kippaxharriers.org.uk/lcwv2.htm . It will be necessary to run the routes once or twice to become familiar with them prior to the race.
Are there cut-off times on each leg?
Yes. Each leg has its own cut-off time with 2 hours down to 1 hour difference between each section. Although 1 hour to run 10 miles seems unachievable, it is expected that earlier sections will be completed well within the allowed time, effectively ‘banking’ some time for later. If, however the cut off times are not met, then the waiting pairs are released as a ‘mass start’ without the baton.
What if there are more than 12 runners interested in taking part?
The fairest way would be to decide the 6 pairs by ballot. Those not selected would be asked to be on standby in case of injury or illness to selected runners. Also, we will need volunteers to help with travel to and from the individual sections of the route during training and on the day, so if you’re not selected you can still be involved.
How do I register my interest?
See Jo or Iain. The race maybe a long way off yet, but we need to form a team well in advance so we can then allocate a specific section to each pair. Then we’ll arrange a schedule of recce runs probably around June next year.
