Bridlington Half Marathon
Sunday 18th October 2009 - Iain Denby
Debbie and I entered the Bridlington Half Marathon at short notice. I was due to run with Liz, but due to illness, she’d passed her number on to Debbie. We both arrived at the start line without a race plan or any expectations, as Debbie was towards the end of her marathon training and I was just running it for fun.
It was clear by the low number of runners (around 800), the low key start/finish sign and the chalk line denoting the start line, that this was a small and very relaxed event.
The course started on the sea-front then headed off out into the countryside via Sewerby, Flamborough and Bempton before returning to Bridlington. One more loop out to Sewerby, passing through Sewerby Hall grounds this time, before returning to Bridlington and the sea-front finish.
It was an undulating course along country roads and paths taking in some very scenic views. The sunny weather with a refreshing cool breeze from the sea front added to the enjoyment.
We ran separately, but both felt good along the way and were delighted to finish with PBs –Debbie 1.47 and myself 1.42. No fancy goody bags were on offer as we crossed the line, just a medal and a cup of water. Mind you, it was only £8.00 to enter.
The sea was too tempting for me and decided to cool down with a paddle before rounding the day off with good old fish and chips!
This race was one of the most enjoyable Half marathons we’ve run and we’d recommend it to everyone for next year.
